Where You Should (NOT!) Stay in Bangkok for First time Visitors

For your first visit to Thailand, carefully consider the neighborhood in Bangkok where you want to stay. As someone who has spent more than 15 years in Bangkok, I can state this. Any itinerary that has been carefully thought out can be ruined by Bangkok’s terrible traffic.

This article includes hotels near tourist hotspots you should take into account for your first unforgettable trip to Bangkok.

BANGKOK

BEST HOTEL AREA 2024

Where you shouldn’t stay in Bangkok all depends on what type of traveler you are.

For example if you are a traveling family perhaps you want a hotel with playrooms and kiddie pools for the little ones. Or maybe you just want to party it out all night long in Bangkok with that special someone or group of friends. You’ll find a selection of hotels in the right areas of Bangkok for that too.

“My hand picked hotels will give you the best experiences of local life in Bangkok!”

What Type of Traveler are You?

Backpackers – Head for the one and only Khao San Road in Bangkok’s Old Quarters. It’s full of hostels and super budget hotels. Also a really good area to find cheap food too.

Budget Traveler – You don’t want to spend a lot but don’t want a dirty room either. And in a decent location near train stations. I recommend Bangkok’s Huai Khwang and Chinatown districts.

Cultural Explorer – To learn about Thailand’s culture, head to the city’s oldest district of Rattankosin Island. It’s where you’ll find Khao San Road and Bangkok’s historic Chinatown.

Shopaholic – For shopping in Bangkok, from luxury brand name goods to cheap elephant pants. Siam, Chidlom and Pratunam are the best areas areas to stay.

Party Animal – From Bangkok’s raunchy nightlife to speakeasy bars. You defintley want to stay around central Sukhumvit and down through Thonglor/Ekkamai.

Family Vacationer – Traveling with a mix of kids, teens or elderly I highly recommend staying around Siam Square. There’s a mix of shopping and plenty of restaurants.

Luxury Traveler – Great news! You don’t need to spend a lot to stay in Bangkok’s posh Central Chidlom district for fancy hotels. Not saying it’s cheap but certainly more afforadable compared to the West.

Foodie Explorer – The city is a food lover’s haven. Though if you want to stay near hotels in Bangkok close to the best taste of foods I recommend Thonglor/Ekkamai and of course Chinatown!

From my experiences speaking with travelers from around the world, they love visiting Bangkok because there are so many hotels in the city that are affordable, yet clean with good amenities.

And if you can afford to spend even $100USD and especially more you can really live it up. Many central hotels in Bangkok have top notch fitness centers, spas and even rooftop bars with amazing views of the city like CRU Champagne Bar at Red Sky, Centara Grand at CentralWorld.
