Best Area to Stay in Sapa for Your First Epic Visit to Vietnam

If you’re visiting Sapa for your first trip in Vietnam, I know there’s one thing on your mind. You want to know which area and hotel has the best view of Sapa’s amazing mountain scenery.

Who doesn’t want to wake up to a breathtaking view of rice terraced mountains as far as the eye can see?

So in this blog post, I’ll cover which areas you should consider. Additionally, drop some Sapa hotel names to make your decision making a little easier.

Geographically, Sapa is not a big city. The town center is small, lined with traditional Vietnamese restaurants and Sapa delicacies, cozy cafes with foamy egg coffee, souvenir shops, and, of course, hotels.

However, if you are looking for a hotel with a strict mountain view, especially one that isn’t expensive, consider choosing a Sapa hotel located southwest of Sapa Lake.

It’s an area closer to the city’s center. I reviewed a few of these hotels below.

To be honest, there’s not much to do in Sapa. Besides trekking, experiencing the culture, and drinking delicious Vietnamese coffee. There are no malls with bookstores and movie theaters.

So you might as well get a decent hotel with an amazing view of Sapa’s incredible valleys and mountains. When you see the clouds pass through the mountain peaks, it is a spectacular show already.

That said, Vietnam’s city in the clouds is still extremely touristy. So there are many hotels of varying budgets. The good news is that there are so many hotels around Sapa, you’ll find one that fits your budget, no problem at all.

My Biggest Sapa Hotel Tip

Whichever hotel you book in Sapa, during check in, which is usually around 1pm to 2pm, ask if you can look at the available rooms.

Many hotels will allow early check in as long as the room types you booked are available.

You want to make sure you’re satisfied with the view before finalizing check in. Most hotels shouldn’t have a problem. As long as the room types you booked are available.

Best Time to Visit Sapa, Vietnam

Like anywhere else, Sapa hotel and resort room rates ebb and flow with the season. So what’s the best time to go?

Let’s start with the worst months to visit Sapa first:

  • June through August is the wettest season and is considered the summer months. My latest Sapa three day trip was around this time. It rained on and off. And clouds rolled in and out with sunlight breaking through briefly. So not ideal for a mountain view room.
  • December to February will be cold and foggy. It might even snow. So dress and plan accordingly.
  • March to May is Sapa’s springtime. The temperature is warmer with less rain, which means fewer clouds. Which means better views of beautiful terraced rice fields.
  • The Autumn months of September to November are the best times to enjoy the views of Sapa. And trekking conditions along the amazing rice fields and local villages are ideal.

I highly recommend staying around Sapa Lake, especially if you:

  • Want to avoid walking up and down hills (though sometimes this is unavoidable)
  • Want a view of the lake, view the mountains up north as a backdrop
  • Want to stay near the bus stations for transport back to Hanoi
  • Searching for Sapa hotels in the $30 USD budget range
  • You really, really like lakes

Hotels Around Sapa Lake

Sapa Legacy Hotel ⭐️⭐️

This is a good example of a decent-quality Sapa hotel in the $30 USD range per night, offering a view of Sapa Lake. They do have city view rooms that cost a few dollars less.

My opinion is to go for the lake view room, which should have a terrace balcony. A simple breakfast is usually included in the room rate.

During check-in, request a room on the 4th floor, which is the highest floor for optimal lake view. It’s a basic room, but most importantly, it’s clean, which most travelers, including me, care about.

Their standard rooms are around 22 square meters. So the space is decent for two people. Sapa Legacy Hotel was recently renovated in 2023, so the rooms are fresh and updated.

Affordable Sapa Hotels with Great Mountain Views

D Home Sapa ⭐️⭐️

As the name suggests, this is a homestay rather than a traditional hotel. And D Home Sapa is one of the best ones in town. All the rooms have a different design and interior.

The largest rooms are 30 square meters, costing around $30 USD. But these rooms might not have a good view of the mountains. I found that the smaller rooms, 18 square meters, have a better view. Including the Fanispan tram making its way to the Fansipan mountain base. Some of the rooms also have a bathtub with an amazing outdoor nature view.

18 square meter rooms are also around $30 USD per night with taxes. But you can find these rooms for slightly cheaper off-season.

Pistachio Hotel Sapa ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

So here are the pros of staying at Pistachio Hotel Sapa. The rooms are 38 square meters, so plenty of space. All of the rear facing rooms have a fantastic view of terraced rice paddies in the mountains.

There are indoor and outdoor swimming pools. A fitness center, albeit small. Buffet breakfast is included in the room rate. And, it is a true 4 star hotel.

The cons, if you rather explore the town on foot, the hotel’s location is a bit up a hill. The walk is not bad because the hotel I stayed at is further up. This hotel is recommended if you don’t mind the walk or plan on using Grab taxi to get around.

In any case, I highly recommend staying here. I think the mountain view rooms with a balcony are worth it, even though it costs $100 USD a night with breakfast.

Sapa Valley View Hotel ⭐️⭐️

A 28 square meter standard guest room here will set you back $25 USD, and you get a mountain view. Though not all rooms will have the best view. So, do ask if you can see before moving all your luggage in.

Sapa Valley View Hotel is located in a very quiet section. So there’s nature all around. But not far from restaurants and coffee shops, so you won’t feel isolated at all.

What’s most special about this hotel is the small team that runs and takes care of guests’ needs. That said, it’s an older hotel, and if you’re not too nitpicky about the condition, I think this hotel is a good option for budget travelers.

Cat Cat Galerie d’Art ⭐️⭐️⭐️

This is a very cozy boutique hotel located near the city center. But again, there is a slight uphill walk to get there. But once you do, you’ll love Cat Cat Galerie d’Art.

By the way, if you’re wondering about the hotel’s quirky name, there is a small painting gallery inside.

You can sit outside on the balcony terrace from their deluxe rooms to enjoy the mountain view. The deluxe rooms cost around $50 USD per night. It’s a 25 square meter room, so it’s good for 2 people and a child.

If you need more space for up to 4 adults, then go for the luxury villa. The room’s size is a whopping 60 square meters. With 2 bedrooms, each with king sized bed and bathrooms with bathtubs.

These villas are on the top floor, which means a prime view of the mountains from the private terrace balcony. And the price is around $100 USD.

Sapa CatCat Hills Resort & Spa ⭐️⭐️⭐️

On this list, Sapa CatCat Hills Resort & Spa is a bit further from the city center. But, it’s worth it if you want more quiet and especially if you want amazing views.

For $60 USD after taxes, you can book a 24 square meter superior room for two guests with breakfast included.

For about $15 extra, you can book a deluxe room twice the size!

The views from the rooms are amazing here!

If you can afford a room with a balcony, you should go for it. You won’t be disappointed!

Oh yeah, this hotel also has a swimming pool to enjoy after a long day of exploring Sapa.

Viettrekking Sapa ⭐️⭐️⭐️

If you’re on TikTok a lot, you’ve come across Vietrekking Sapa’s café. It’s well known, because it has a prime view of the Fansipan tram and tracks traveling to the Fansipan mountain base.

The views from the mountain-facing rooms are unobstructed. Which means the room rates at Vietrekking will cost more. But the price isn’t crazy.

25 square meter deluxe mountain view rooms with a mountain view and terrace cost around $80 USD. The rooms are modern and clean. So these rooms are very popular for foreign tourists.

Vietrekking Sapa Hotel

They also have cheaper rooms with a city view that cost about $15 less. I don’t think it’s worth it.

That said, there are a lot of room types at Viettrekking. Some that will set you back $150 USD. If you love taking incredible Insta-worthy photos in an amazing hotel interior design, this is the place to be.

It’s also one of the Sapa hotels with a swimming pool, where you can enjoy the sweeping view of the mountains and valleys.

Arengo Boutique Sa Pa ⭐️⭐️

If you’re not overly concerned about a mountain or lake view, but focused on super affordable, big and clean rooms the consider Arengo Boutique Sapa Hotel.

Their 30 square meters standard rooms with no view only cost $13 USD. However, their 35 square meter rooms with a city view only cost $3 more. And a simple buffet breakfast is included. Can’t get any better than that, especially if you’re staying longer days in Sapa.

Now the location of this hotel is just a 10 or so minute walk to the city center. About a 3 minute walk to Sapa Lake. Best of all, the sidewalks in this area are relatively flat and easy to walk.

There’s nothing else at this hotel except the full service and hospitality you’d expect at a 2 star hotel in Sapa with very good reviews.

Sapa Paradise Hotel ⭐️⭐️⭐️

Sapa Paradise Hotel is a highly rated budget hotel right in the heart of Sapa’s city center. Which is why I’m recommending this one to you.

They’ve got these 25 square meter rooms with a city view for about $30 USD with breakfast and taxes included.

If you need more space for three people to fit comfortably, they do have 35 square meter rooms with one single bed and one queen size bed.

All for approx. $45 USD also includes breakfast and taxes. With these prices in the city center, I think it’s really good.

There’s a park right across this hotel with many local restaurants and cafes in the surrounding area. It’s really beautiful at night when the businesses are lit up, and the fog rolls in.

Sapa Paradise Hotel is also close to Sapa Square, about 200 meter walk. Sapa Lake is also about 200 meter walk in the other direction.

Sapa Heaven House ⭐️⭐️⭐️

Here is a Sapa Hotel I recommend for those looking for a swimming pool. The Sapa Heaven House is a lovely little boutique hotel located south of the city.

Which means you’ll get an incredible view of the mountains, just be sure you pick the King Mountain rooms.

Otherwise, their garden view rooms, which cost about $10 USD less, are a good alternative too.

Sapa Heaven House Guest Room

I also recommend Sapa Heaven House for families. Because they have these 22 square meter rooms with a private bathroom and two king sized beds.

With a maximum occupancy of 4 persons for around $35 USD per day, including breakfast. I think that is a spectacular deal.

This is a very charming, quaint hotel with good reviews. And the location is quiet, but you can stroll to Sapa City center in about 10 or so minutes.
