Momo Hotel KL Review

I stayed at Momo Hotel during my latest two week trip to Kuala Lumpur. And this was the first hotel I stayed in for three nights. Here’s my review!

Momo Hotel is located in a neighborhood called Chow Kit, which isn’t far from Bukit Bintang, the hub of Kuala Lumpur. Recently, I decided I gotta get out to different areas, and try staying in different budget hotels.

Somewhere that is not Bukit Bintang. But close, and can travel to Bukit Bintang easily.

The area of Chow Kit fit the bill.

Why Momo Hotel?

It’s the location, of course. This hotel is located in the Chow Kit neighborhood of Kuala Lumpur. Historically, a suburb of and for the working class. However, there’s a lot of gentrification currently.

Doesn’t hurt that there are two train stations near the Momo Hotel:

  • KL Monorail Line – Medan Tuanku Station (5 minute walk from Momo Hotel)
  • Sri Petaling Line – Sultan Ismail Station (6 minute walk from Momo Hotel)
  • Amapang Line – Sultan Ismail Station (6 minute walk from Momo Hotel)

Chow Kit is also known as an area for prostitution and drugs. But that was in the past. Probably still stuff going on. But the area is safe for families visiting Kuala Lumpur.

As a matter of fact, they do have rooms with bunk beds. Which I think would be fun for younger travelers.

It’s rated a three star hotel. The room quality feels like it. But there’s no fitness center. No swimming pool. I think it’s one star, possibly two stars at most.

That said, there’s one thing you should be aware of while deciding to stay at Momo Hotel. I’ll get into that soon.

How Much?

Aside from the great location. I stayed here because it was super affordable. At the time, I booked 3 nights and paid $25 USD per night, including taxes.

I found discounts for Momo Hotel on Agoda.com at the time.

My Experience at Momo Hotel

Checking in was smooth. I didn’t have to leave a security deposit. The receptionist was super friendly. Matter of fact, all the staff I encountered were helpful and polite.

What I Like about Momo Hotel

Let’s start with the bed. It’s a comfortable queen sized bed with soft pillows. And the blanket was not too thick, not too thin. Just the way I like it.

The overall first impression that you get is cleanliness. It had a minimalist design, which is what I love the most. That, and plenty of charge points, both traditional plug and USB sockets. There’s a universal socket, so it’ll work with North American power plugs.

Not sure about other countries, but it’s always good to bring along one adapter if you’re traveling to Malaysia.

And these power sockets are right next to the bed.

The shower was clean. There’s a rainshower head with very good pressure and steady hot water. The towels looked new and had thick fiber, too.

As I mentioned, the room is 15 sqm. Plenty of space for a solo traveler. And definitely enough for two guests with luggage.

Things Momo Hotel Can (Possibly)Work On

When I read the Google reviews, as well as reviews on Agoda.com, I came across comments about noise from outside vehicle traffic.

Since I booked a city view room, which has front-facing windows towards the street. There was a lot of loud noise coming, particularly from motorbikes. These motorbikes were altered with aftermarket parts to increase performance.

Resulting in louder sounds, especially when riders rev up their engines at the stop lights. Since Momo Hotel is located at an intersection, it gets noisy. It’s not constant. But certainly enough to get your attention.

You can’t see from here, but there’s a sticker on the window saying if the noise is bothering you. You can go to the reception for earplugs.

Totally understandable because the hotel is not responsible when there’s a bunch of assholes revving their motorbike engines.

Since I stayed through the weekend, I noticed it wasn’t noisy on Sunday and Monday at night. That said, once in a while, I did wake up with the sound of a large popping engine noise. To be honest, the windows could be more soundproofed, though.

Another small gripe, not a big one. Is that even though Wi-Fi internet access was fast, why couldn’t they make it so guests could connect to the in-room smart television?

What to Do?

I think Momo Hotel is really nice. The price point is excellent. It’s not expensive at all, and I think even if they charged $35 USD a night. I would still consider staying there. That’s how much I like it.

If you want to stay there and don’t want to chance it with the noise. Your options are to stay in rooms with no windows.

Or to book rooms at the rear of the building, called the normal Crashpad, with no city view. But those rooms are smaller at 12 square meters.

Overall, I recommend Momo Hotel. Rooms are clean. Hotel staff are professional. The location is fantastic. Plenty of restaurants and train stations are nearby.
