Hua Hin may not be as developed as Bangkok but it does afford many tourists comforts such as good quality hotels by the beach with reasonable rates. It’s a city well known for a much more laid back atmosphere. A clean beach and most of all delicious and affordable seafood.
But if you don’t mind walking just a short distance to Hua Hin beach you can certainly locate cheaper accommodations. However if you’re coming from afar, why not pick a hotel in Hua Hin that is close to the beach.
You’d be surprised how affordable beachside hotels in Hua Hin are.
I’ll even reveal my “Top 5 Hua Hin Hotels by the Beach” so you can make a better decision on where you want to stay.
But before I get into that, here are the best reasons why I think you should stay at a hotel right on Hua Hin’s pristine beach.
5 Reasons Why You Should Stay at a Hotel Near Hua Hin Beach
Hua Hin’s beach lines the central section of the city. By choosing a hotel by the beach area you can easily visit nearby attractions in Hua Hin such as their famous night bazaar.
For a small city, Hua Hin has a pretty big traffic problem. With very few pedestrian crosswalks in between. By staying at a hotel right on Hua Hin beach you don’t need to worry about crossing and waiting for long traffic lights.
Lots of hotels on Hua Hin Beach provide free shuttle service for guests to travel to nearby attractions such as the Cicada Market, Bluport Mall,and other points of interest near the hotels. So no need to rely on your own transportation or pay for tuk-tuks that charge 150THB one way.
Even though there are many international 5-star hotels located right on Hua Hin beach you don’t need to spend big money. There are many very affordable hotels right next to the mega hotels that share the same beach. If you can afford the big-name hotels then go for it. You won’t regret it.
Hua Hin beach is on the eastern seaboard so you’ll be able to enjoy a beautiful sunrise in the morning. Which is the best reason of all in my book to stay right on the beach!
I Highly Recommend Staying at a Hotel on Hua Hin Beach Between Hua Hin Night Market and Cicada Market
Hua Hin has a long stretch of sandy beach with many hotels right on the beachfront, from 5 stars to cozy boutique hotels.
The best area of the beach with hotels is between Hua Hin Night Market down to Khao Takiab (เขาตะเกียบ) translated as Chopstick Hill. Though Monkey Hill would be a more proper name as the area is full of cheeky monkeys that will rummage through your bags if given the chance.
But a few of the hotels on my top 5 Hua Hin beach hotels are just slightly outside of that particular area. Not by much though.
Matter of fact, one of my favorite hotels in Hua Hin by the beach and very close to Khao Takiab is number one on my list. It’s one of the best hotels in Hua Hin and is recommended for your first visit.
I’ve always been a fan of Amari-branded hotels and never had any problems at any of their properties. So when I found out there’s an Amari hotel property in Hua Hin by the beach I was excited to stay there. Granted it’s a bit of a walk to the beach. But they have a free shuttle car to take hotel guests there and back.
The Amari Hua Hin Hotel on Khao Takiab Beach
Technically the Amari Hua Hin is on Khao Takiab which is the southern end of Hua Hin Beach. They even have an awesome clubhouse by the beach where you can order drinks, and food and just chill out by the swimming pool overlooking the ocean.
When I stay at the Amari Hua Hin I usually book their Deluxe Pool View King room. It’s spacious and clean. I particularly like the view of the awesome massive swimming pool in the center of the hotel property. You can get a deluxe room with a view of the pool for around 3000THB per night with taxes.

Affordable large rooms with a great ambiance. I did a review of Escape Hotel Hua Hin a few years back. I’ve been back there a few times ever since, especially when they have price drops on their hotel rooms during low seasons which is a great bargain.
The Escape is still one of the nicest hotels with a short walking distance to the beach and highly recommended. When I’m there I usually book the double rooms on the second floor for 3000THB per night. It’s a great bargain.
There’s even a free shuttle to take you down to Hua Hin’s night market. And they’ll even pick you up for a free return trip at a designated time. The Escape is one of the best affordable beach hotels in Hua Hin I highly recommend it.

If you like pets or you’re traveling with your furry friends, the Ibis Hotel Hua Hin is the best pet-friendly hotel by the beach. Whenever my wife and I travel to Hua Hin with one of our cats we always prefer staying at the Ibis Hua Hin.
There are not many hotels on the beach in Hua Hin that allow pets. Thankfully Ibis is one hotel that does.
Granted their rooms are the smallest out of the five hotels reviewed here. But it’s very clean and the property throughout is well maintained.
However I want to add if you’re given the option to purchase breakfast I recommend passing it. I don’t think it’s an added value. There are many places to eat near the hotel within a short walk.

With the Hilton brand name, you’ll know this will be one of the best beach hotels in Hua Hin. This 5-star resort is practically right on the beach. The beach is 90 meters from the hotel but with their amazing swimming pool, it’ll be hard to decide if you’ll want to stay by the pool or swim in the ocean.
The Hilton Hua Hin is not cheap. But not expensive either by international standards. Their King Classic Ocean view rooms are only 4000THB per night with taxes. That’s a real bargain for a 5-star hotel in the center of Hua Hin’s beach.
5. Avani Hua Hin Resort and Village – 4 Star Hotel

The Avani Hua Hin is another awesome hotel by the beach in Hua Hin. Again, the swimming pool at this resort’s main attraction. I’ve spent many days just soaking in the pool. Some really fun memories.
Yet this is another hotel by the beach only 90 meters from the hotel and affordable too. For 3000THB per night with taxes I’ve stayed in the Avani Deluxe Room.
The Avani Hua Hin is practically one of the newest hotels in central Hua Hin, built-in 2016. I especially recommend this hotel if you’re traveling with children. Your kids will love the swimming pool and the fun kid’s club on premises.
These are the best beach hotels to stay in Hua Hin for the very first time. And if you consider the prices are quite affordable too, especially 5-star hotels like the Hilton Hua Hin. And if you’re on a budget you should consider staying at the Escape Hotel Hua Hin.
But whichever hotel you choose on this list I’m sure you’re going to enjoy your holiday in Hua Hin for your very first special visit.

JJ Weekend Market is still central Bangkok. Yet room rates for hotels and hostels are affordable with reasonable rates in that area. With surprisingly good quality hotels too.
Because Bangkok is a growing city the area near JJ Weekend Market is changing in a good way. There are subway and train stations in the area with good places to check out.
Like the name says, it’s a weekend market. So you can bet there will be hordes of tourists and locals alike heading to JJ Market. Which means packed trains and problems finding taxis. If your purpose is to explore the market it’s smart to book a hotel near JJ Weekend Market.
Even if you’re not only in Bangkok to visit JJ Market there are plenty of shopping malls in the area like Central Lad Prao Mall, the One Park Mall, and Union Mall. There are more things to do around the than you’d think which I wrote about here.
If you’re catching a flight out of Don Meung Airport (DMK), JJ Weekend Market area is just 14km away. Book a hotel around the vicinity of JJ Market and you’ll be close to the airport and still be able to explore Bangkok. Mo Chit Bus Terminal also called Northern Bus Terminal is also not far off either.

3 Best Areas to Stay Near JJ Weekend Market in Bangkok
Here’s my list of the best areas to stay near JJ Weekend Market including names of hostels and hotels with good reviews and best location in order of preference. These select locations are in walking distance to the BTS Sky Train station.
Ari – Hip and chic restaurants and boutique shops in this neighborhood.
Saphan Kwai – Just a bit quieter and less hectic than Ari, Saphan Kwai is a quaint location.
Mo Chit – So this station is closest to JJ Weekend Market. But there’s fewer hostels and hotels near Mo Chit except a few here that you’ll like.
1. Ari (อารีย์)
Hotel Price Range: $25USD to $100USD BTS Station: Ari
Why Stay in Ari: Hip and chic neighborhood in Bangkok perfect for the young or at least the young at heart.
Soi Ari or specifically Ari neighborhood is just south of JJ Market, just two Sky Train stops away. It’s busiest on Phahon Yothin Road but most of the hotels and hostels listed below are situated on the quiet areas of Ari where bars and small Western and Asian restaurants serving yuppie Thai clientele dine and drink.
Ari has a mix of budget and affordable hotels close to JJ Weekend Market. Many operate as hostels and boutique type properties that you will enjoy.

Bangkok’s Ari neighborhood is very busy, especially on weekends when most locals are on their day offs. But it’s relative proximity to JJ Weekend Market is the main reason why you’d want to stay in this area because it’s also convenient for sightseeing the rest of Bangkok.
2. Saphan Kwai (สะพานควาย)

Why Stay in Saphan Kwai: Everything’s here, food, shopping and train stations.
Saphan Kwai is just one BTS Sky Train stop away from JJ Market and this area is an eclectic mix of old Bangkok and upcoming trendy fashion boutiques, cafés, and restaurants. Saphan Kwai is an old school neighborhood popularly known for its street food however so you can’t go hungry or overspend on food in this area.
Saphan Kwai neighborhood is not as busy compared to Ari. So if you’re looking for a hotel or hostel in Bangkok that isn’t in such a busy area, yet close to JJ Weekend Market then you should focus on this neighborhood.

Hotel Price Range: $10USD to $55USD BTS Station: Mo Chit MRT Station: Chatuchak
Why Stay in Mo Chit: Everything’s here, food, shopping and train stations.
Mo Chit is where JJ Weekend Market is located. So if you choose any of the hotels listed below you’ll be very near one of the world’s most famous weekend market. This neighborhood is at it’s busiest on the weekends however. Mo Chit is where you’ll find the most budget hotels near JJ Weekend Market.
During the weekdays when the market is closed it’ll be quiet. However, there’s a big mall near JJ Weekend Market called Central Lad Prao and Union Mall, which is only one station away on the MRT Chatuchak Station.
Here’s a set of hotels and hostels near Mo Chit BTS Station to consider:
In general Mo Chit area is more quiet with less to do in the immediate JJ Weekend Market surroundings. It’s also the reason I place Mo Chit #3 on this list of the best areas to stay near JJ Weekend Market. Mo Chit also has the most amount of budget hostels and hotels out of the three areas listed here.
So if you’re visiting Bangkok during the weekend and would like to stay near Don Meung airport to catch a flight then Mo Chit area is the area to stay in Bangkok during your visit.
The Takeaway
Ari, Saphan Kwai, and Mo Chit are the three best areas near JJ Weekend Market with very good budget hostels and affordable 2 and 3-star hotels. If your goal is to spend a lot of time at over at JJ Weekend Market I don’t recommend staying in an area too far away, like Khao San Road for example just to save some money by staying in cheaper guesthouses found in that area.
It doesn’t make sense to spend money on round trip taxi rides at a neighborhood further away when there are perfectly affordable hostels and hotels near JJ Weekend Market.

Book your KL hotels near a train line. It’s one of the best ways to get around and explore the city. I recommend staying at a hotel near any of the hotels along the KL Monorail Line, specifically Imbi Station and Bukit Bintang Station.
If you can’t stand the smell of cigarettes then be sure to specify you want a nonsmoking floor. Trust me on this you’ll thank me later.
Don’t be turned off if you see a room rate that is too cheap. Many $20USD per night hotel rooms in Kuala Lumpur are decent and clean but on the small side. And there may not be a window.

The 5 Best Areas to Stay in Kuala Lumpur for First-Time Visitors
Bukit Bintang– Kuala Lumpur’s primary shopping center with many hotels from guest houses to the city’s top 5-star hotels. From here you’re in easy walking distance to explore popular parts of the city. My recommendation and one of the best areas to stay in Kuala Lumpur.
Changkat– If you like your hotels near bars for booze then Changkat is where you want to be. From dive pubs to wine bars if you pick a hotel near Changkat you’ll be right at home.
KL Sentral– Trains and buses plus a shopping center all rolled into one at KL Sentral. KL Sentral is the city’s main transportation hub so book a hotel here if you’re planning on taking day trips out from KL.
Chinatown – Sort of the city’s historic district with old-fashioned shophouses, restaurants, and counterfeit luxury goods markets.
Kuala Lumpur City Center (KLCC)– Here’s where you’ll find lots of 5-star hotels in KL’s business district. Hotels in this area are close to KL’s most famous building and landmark, the Petronas Towers. LRT Ampang Line has a few stations around KLCC.

The first area I highly recommend staying in is called Bukit Bintang. It’s my favorite area in Kuala Lumpur!
1. Bukit Bintang

Speaking from personal travel experiences in KL, I really do believe that Bukit Bintang is one of the best areas to stay in Kuala Lumpur ever.
Bukit Bintang is like the Times Square of New York City. It has flashy billboard lights, and shopping centers, full of activity and people. I highly recommend booking a hotel in the Bukit Bintang area of Kuala Lumpur for your very first visit.
Yes sure it’s where all the tourists go to stay. And that’s for a good reason. Everything you could want and possibly need for a fun experience in KL can be found in Bukit Bintang.
Even though Bukit Bintang is such a busy neighborhood prices for hotels are not so expensive. Even though all the top hotel chains like Marriott and Millennium Grand are there believe it or not you can find economy hotels with single rooms as cheap as $25USD.
That’s not bad at all considering you can easily walk to the posh shopping centers of Bukit Bintang and walk to Jalan Alor, KL’s famous street food haven.
For traveling families Bukit Bintang will be the perfect location for kids and most certainly for adults.
I highly recommend staying at a hotel in Bukit Bintang, especially when it’s your first visit to Kuala Lumpur. It’s easy to travel to and get to where you need to go because of the train stations. There are so many varieties of restaurants all around plus the shopping malls to check out.
Trust me, after staying in Bukit Bintang for yourself you will know for sure why it’s one of the best areas to stay in Kuala Lumpur.
But for the more adult crowd, it’s not a bad idea to look into Kuala Lumpur’s Changkat area, which is not far from Bukit Bintang.
2. Changkat
Hotel Price Range: $15USD to $250USD Subway Line: KL Monorail Bukit Bintang station and LRT Bukit Bintang station Why Stay in Changkat: The mecca of international bars and pubs in KL. Easy walking distance to Bukit Bintang and KLCC. Changkat is easily one of the best areas to stay in Kuala Lumpur for nightlife.

Changkat borders Bukit Bintang so it’s still an advantageous location for your first visit to Kuala Lumpur. The only difference is you have to walk just a little further to Bukit Bintang Monorail station and LRT Bukit Bintang station. But if you put yourself up at a hotel near Changkat you’ll be near KL’s popular mini pub crawl street that is closed off at night to vehicles.
Changkat is also near Jalan Alor, KL’s famous tourist food spot popular for hawker stands and foods found throughout Southeast Asia. Jalan Alor is where you should go find famous Malay food and other Southeast Asian favorites.
Also, a strip of affordable massage parlors can be found along the streets leading to Changkat. A great little location in KL for adult travelers. So I recommend staying at Changkat for KL’s nightlife. Because the location is also not far from Bukit Bintang. The only difference is that Changkat is a more adult-oriented neighborhood in Kuala Lumpur.

Changkat is a decent area to pick and choose hotels as there are also many hotels in low price ranges to slightly upscale hotel properties to book.
It is a more adult-oriented location in Kuala Lumpur so you may come across touts looking to persuade men to partake in “special” massages. But even so, Changkat is a pretty good area to stay and explore Kuala Lumpur during your first-ever visit to the city.
3. KL Sentral
Hotel Price Range: $30USD to $250USD Subway Line: All train lines and certain bus lines converge at KL Sentral Why Stay in KL Sentral: If you’re in KL for a few days and need quick access to KLIA airports. KL Sentral is the best area to stay in Kuala Lumpur for shopping.
Booking a hotel near NU Sentral Mall is a good idea for a first visit to KL…
KL Sentral is where you can find the most good quality budget hotels in Kuala Lumpur.
As the transportation hub of Kuala Lumpur, there won’t be a problem finding a hotel in KL Sentral. From there you can travel to most parts of the city via the train system and even to most parts of Peninsular Malaysia.
Every single train line in Peninsular Malaysia converges on KL Sentral. This is why this is a great area to choose a hotel if you’re planning on exploring Western Malaysia.
Another reason why KL Sentral is a very good area to pick a hotel in Kuala Lumpur is because it’s attached to NU Sentral Mall. So you’re not far off from retail therapy as well as a wide variety of dining options from fast food to casual sit-in dining.
Because KL Sentral is linked to all train lines you can take a quick trip to Bukit Bintang as well as Changkat. So you’re not far off from popular tourist spots in Kuala Lumpur. This is one of the main reasons why KL Sentral is one of the best areas to stay in Kuala Lumpur.
As I mentioned earlier I am a frequent visitor to Kuala Lumpur. Sometimes I just visit for a few days and when I do I prefer to book a hotel near KL Sentral. Mainly because I like using the KLIA Express train located beneath KL Sentral station to get to the airport.
NU Sentral Mall which is connected to KL Sentral station has lots of retail brand name stores as well as plenty of casual restaurants plus Western fast food chains.
KL Sentral is an ideal area to stay in KL when you’re planning on exploring Kuala Lumpur and other parts of beautiful Malaysia.
4. Chinatown
Hotel Price Range: $10USD to $70USD Subway Line: Chinatown is a wide area. Pasar Seni MRT is in the center of Chinatown. KL Monorail Line Mahajarela is near the entrance to Petaling Street. Then up north of KL’s Chinatown is Masjid Jamek LRT station. Why Stay in Chinatown: The old world meets the new world at KL’s Chinatown. Chinatown is the best area to stay in Kuala Lumpur on a budget.

Kuala Lumpur’s Chinatown is a colorful and lively part of the city filled with restaurants and hawker stands serving up good cheap eats and cheap shopping. If you’re here you’re looking for hotels near or along Petaling Street.
Petaling Street is KL’s shopping bizarre filled with loads of goods, mostly cheap and fake but that’s part of the fun, isn’t it?
You can also walk to other points of interest in KL such as Central Market and Merdeka Square, sight of KL’s independence.
So if you want to see the old parts of Kuala Lumpur, picking a hotel right in KL’s Chinatown will put you in touch with KL’s rich history. This is why many consider Chinatown as one of the best areas to stay in Kuala Lumpur.
Ahyu Hotel
I Highly Recommend the Ahyu Hotel in Chinatown
I frequently stay at Ahyu Hotel when I come to Kuala Lumpur alone. It’s a short walk to Masjid Jamek LRT station. So it is easy for me to get to this hotel from KL Sentral after taking the 1 hour 30-minute bus ride from Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA).
Rooms cost about USD 20 with taxes and these are the rooms with windows. So of course windowless rooms are cheaper. Most importantly it is clean and the rooms look new and in good condition. There’s a small fridge, room safe and the Wi-Fi internet speed is sufficient.
The front staff service is super friendly, it is a terrific hotel! And you will enjoy the Indian restaurants nearby. I certainly did!
Currently, it’s a good time to start your exploration of KL by booking a hotel in Chinatown. Through the years I’ve noticed that this little slice of KL is undergoing major renovation. New hotels are built up and many small businesses, particularly hipster cafés and restaurants are popping up all over the area.
KL’s Chinatown is undoubtedly one of my favorite spots in the city and it’ll be interesting to see how the transformation will look.
Regardless I find Chinatown is the best area in Kuala Lumpur for budget travelers.
5. Kuala Lumpur City Center (KLCC)
Hotel Price Range: $40USD to $300USD Subway Line: Ampang Line and KLCC Why Stay in Kuala Lumpur City Center (KLCC): This is KL’s flash business center with many new hotels including 4-star properties. Best hotels in the Kuala Lumpur area all in the KLCC area.
KLCC- The financial district of Kuala Lumpur…
If cash is not a concern for you then KLCC has the best hotels in Kuala Lumpur for you. KLCC neighborhood is Kuala Lumpur’s financial business area. I stayed in KLCC the fewest times because I used to go over to the Thai Embassy in KL to apply for a new visa.
KLCC is where you will find the most high-class business hotels in Kuala Lumpur. If you have the money and can pay for high-end hotel rooms then KLCC is the best area to stay in Kuala Lumpur for you.
KLCC is also where you can find the Petronas Towers, Malaysia’s famous skyscraper. Staying at KLCC you’ll still have some advantages when exploring the rest of Kuala Lumpur. There are several LRT train lines located along KLCC.
There are also a few shopping centers and the biggest one is located on the lower levels of the Petronas Towers. Plenty of restaurants can be found in the area as well. But if you’re staying there check out the food court inside Suria KLCC on level 2.
KLCC area is a bit more spread out. So I recommend looking for a hotel near the Petronas Towers because it’ll just be more convenient for sightseeing on your first visit to KL. The closest one on this list is Le Apple Boutique KLCC which is a very nice hotel with and in walking distance to an LRT train station too plus a shopping center.
The Takeaway
Kuala Lumpur is an amazing city to explore in Malaysia. I travel there often back and forth from Thailand at least 3 or 4 times a year. So I’m quite familiar with the areas of KL particularly where to stay for sightseeing.
Please remember the 10MYR per night hotel tax that was introduced on September 1st, 2017. You pay directly to the hotel upon check-in. However, if you book with a hotel booking website like Agoda.com, the tax is collected through their portal.

After visiting Osaka for so many years I’ve now narrowed down 3 of the best areas to stay in Osaka for first time visitors.
And I’m strictly writing this from my own past experiences traveling and exploring this amazing city of Osaka, Japan.
Because I am often asked for names of the best affordable hotels in Osaka to stay for a memorable first trip. I figured now is a good time as any as to write a post on the best areas to stay in Osaka. Especially now when Japan is a super popular tourists destination, especially with the current weaker Yen. So you get more with your hard earned dollars.
You won’t have difficulty finding good food in Osaka…
And as the second largest city in Japan, Osaka has lots of distinct neighborhoods with affordable hotels and rustic ryokan guest houses. Even those famous fun little Japanese capsule hotels are popular accommodations for single or small group of travelers.
My recommended Osaka hotels are located in prime locations of the city. Without the big price tags. All the hotels I recommend here are easy to find. And especially easy to get around Osaka for your very first epic visit to this amazing city after dropping off your luggage.
And I’ll also include some pointers for booking Osaka hotels. Also give my advice on whether or not you should pay for breakfast at the hotel of your choice or not.

Osaka is close to Kansai International Airport (KIX) via public transportation. Kobe Airport is also reasonably close especially by train.
Osaka is a great jumping point for visiting other cities in Japan’s Kansai region. Because of all the train stations connecting to nearby major cities such as Kyoto, Nara, Himeji and Kobe.
In Japan, Osaka holds the title as the “The Nation’s Kitchen” and considering it’s Japan, a gourmand’s paradise, that’s quite a title to behold. So you’re going to find a wide variety of local Japanese and Western foods to enjoy.
Osaka is one of the easiest to wander around on foot. The streets are flat and well-paved. Osaka is Japan’s second biggest city so go have fun exploring.
Don’t like to walk? Osaka has the Midosuji subway line. This subway train line runs north and south. Kind of like the backbone of Osaka. Making stops at popular neighborhoods in Osaka such as Shin-Osaka, Umeda, Shinsaibashi, Namba, and Tennoji.
So those are the five reasons why you should pick Osaka as the city to explore for your first visit to Japan.
They say breakfast is the most important meal of the day. If that’s the case, you’ll find out whether or not breakfast at the hotel is a must for your first visit to Osaka for a holiday.
TO BOOK HOTELS IN OSAKA WITH OR WITHOUT BREAKFAST? THAT IS THE QUESTION
Let’s face it hotel breakfasts are not really free. The price is lumped into the room rate. From my experience, Osaka hotels or Japanese hotels in general do not automatically include the breakfast option. You have to select the breakfast option at an additional cost.
Below are rates for hotel rooms with and without breakfast for 2 guests. If you book the room with breakfast it comes out about $8USD per person. Which is not a bad price for a buffet breakfast.

MY PERSONAL TAKE ON JAPANESE HOTEL BREAKFAST
Eating three square meals a day in Osaka with snacks in between is a pricey ordeal. Especially if when you are not dining alone. And ordering coffee at a Starbucks for two in Japan is not cheap. Yes, we do love our expensive caffeine wherever we go. Even coffee in small cafes in Japan can be expensive.
At buffets, you get unlimited coffee, albeit not the best-tasting coffee. But you get unlimited green tea and it’s the good powdered green tea.
Even an affordable and delightfully delicious sandwich with hot or iced coffee from 7-Eleven in Japan will cost around $8USD per person.
A typical breakfast buffet choice at hotels in Japan. Filling, but is it worth the money?…
That’s why in Japan when I travel with my wife these days I always book a hotel room with breakfast included. If you take the above sample you’ll see that the price for breakfast divided between the two of us is about $8USD per person.
That’s not bad considering I eat a lot. I mean I really, really eat a lot. My wife doesn’t but I make up for her share to the point I’m sure the hotel loses out.
Obviously, not all hotels in Japan charge the same price for breakfast. Personally, any hotel in Japan that charges $8USD to $15USD for buffet breakfast on top of the hotel room rate I consider reasonable.
There were times that I ate so much at the hotel breakfast buffet that I skipped lunch. Okay, most of the time. As I mentioned, I can really, really eat a lot.
IF YOU CAN’T STAND SECONDHAND SMOKE, MAKE SURE YOU BOOK NON-SMOKING ROOMS
I’m not a smoker and neither is my wife. Typically Japanese hotels, capsule hotels, hostels, and guesthouses have specific floors or designated smoking areas. While booking Japan hotel rooms you will be given the chance to choose non-smoking and smoking rooms.
I made a mistake once and booked a smoking room in Tokyo by accident. Don’t ask how. But I can say it’s not a good idea to book a hotel room online after a night of hard drinking.

Since Japanese hotel rooms are very small the smell of cigarette smoke gets condensed to the point I felt I was getting choked. I had to stay one night as there were no nonsmoking rooms when I checked in. Luckily one was available the next day which the hotel staff gladly moved me into. But that was one rough night.

If you’re like me and you can’t stand the smell of stale cigarettes you’d better remember to select a non-smoking room.
So now you know it’s probably best to book a Japanese hotel room with breakfast and to stay away from smoking rooms if you’re a non-smoker, I’ll show you where to book your hotels in Osaka for the best vacation ever.
HERE’S WHERE TO STAY IN OSAKA WITH HOTELS PERFECT FOR SIGHTSEEING
There are three primary areas that I highly recommend you to search for a hotel in Osaka. Each of these areas has a certain unique character and charm. All the locations I mention below in Osaka are very cool places to stay especially for first-time visitors:
Minamai Area – It’s all here in Minamai. Shopping, eating, and an infinite number of locations to take your selfies. Overall Minami is the best area to stay in Osaka. But be warned, it’s also the busiest area with many tourists and locals.
Kita – A slightly more expensive area in uptown Osaka. A more family and kid-friendly part of Osaka too. It is less crowded and hectic but you can take an easy stroll down to Minami for more action.
Tennoji – This area is a toned-down section of Osaka with peaceful parks and hotel rates that are more affordable compared to Minami and Kita. This is the best area to stay in Osaka to take in the slow pace and tranquil qualities of Japan.
1. MINAMI AREA – This is Where You Want to Stay for Food, Shopping, and Pure Eye Candy
The most famous spot in Minami is an area called Dotonbori. It’s Times Square in New York City. The Piccadilly Circus of London. Many people including myself consider Minami as one of the best areas in Osaka for first-time visitors.
I also recommend booking a hotel around Dotonbori. Because you’re also within easy walking distance to Shinsaibashi Shopping Arcade, which is another popular area in Osaka to explore, eat, and shop. It’s like a two-for-one in terms of travel convenience.
Staying at a hotel near Dotonbori means you won’t have to go far for food and shopping…
Hotel prices in Minami are not cheap. That said you can still find bargains and deals for hotels around Dotonbori. And still, save cash for traveling expenses in Osaka.
Because if you stay in Dotonbori you don’t have to worry about taking a train to get there. Dotonbori is one of Osaka’s most famous areas. Chances are you’ll be traveling there more than once if you’re basing yourself in Osaka and exploring cities on the outskirts.
I’ve always been a fan of the Japanese brand of Sotetsu hotels. Both of these Japanese chains of business classed hotels are also great for tourists. And their rates usually include breakfast. Sotetsu Grand Fresa Osaka Namba is conveniently near Namba Station and steps to Dotonbori a very popular tourist hotspot for food, sightseeing, and selfies.
Kita means north in Japanese but this area is also called Umeda. Just north of Dotonbori along Midosuji Boulevard, about a 15-minute walk north or a very short train ride on the Midosuji subway train.
JR Osaka-Umeda station is also here in Kita and with a convenient JR West office so you can pick up pre-ordered JR passes.
In general Kita hotel rates are higher. And that means the rooms are of higher quality. There are more hotels in Kita than Minamai area. So it’s quite possible to find not cheaper but rather better hotel deals within the neighborhood of Kita.
Osaka’s City Hall is a small narrow island surrounded by the O River…
This location in Osaka is less congested and crowded. But that doesn’t mean it’s not as fun as Minami Area. And if you’re traveling with young children they’ll definitely have a fun-filled day at Kids Plaza Osaka. This is why I recommend Kita as one of the best areas to stay in Osaka for your first visit, especially with young children.
3. TENNOJI – Quiet and Beautiful With a Nice Public Park
Just south of Kita and Minami, Tennoji has the most affordable hotel classes between the two other areas. It’s quieter yet you won’t be hard-pressed to find places to eat and shop.
Tennoji is also a major train transportation hub. JR Tennoji station is where I took the train for a short day trip to Wakayama City. When you get a chance be sure to check out Tennoji Park.
That’s where you’ll find the Osaka City Museum of Fine Arts and Osaka Zoo. So Tennoji is also a good area to pick a hotel if you’ve got kids traveling with you as well.
It’s also one of the best areas to stay in Osaka if you want to be close to one of the city’s most beautiful parks and open spaces.
Lots of malls in Tennoji as well as a major train hub in Osaka with many hotels nearby…
Tennjoi is the area I least stayed the most in. That doesn’t mean I don’t like Tennoji I just prefer being in the Minami area is all. But if the hotels I like in Minami and Kita cost more during my travel period I usually find cheaper hotel rates in Tennoji.
Of course, I also like Miyako City Osaka Tennoji which is an expensive hotel. But if you find out there’s a good price for your particular travel dates you should book it because it’s a really nice hotel in Osaka.

5 QUICK TIPS FOR YOUR SEOUL HOTEL SEARCH
Seoul has a fantastic subway train system. It’s extensive, inexpensive in my opinion, and easy to navigate. Best to pick a hotel in Seoul near Subway Lines #1, #2, and #4. You can use the AREX (Airport Railroad Express) which runs from 05:20 – 11:45 for express trains (8000won) or trains with stops from 05:23 – 23:42 (4150won). 24-hour airport limousine bus makes stops near the 5 best areas to stay in Seoul.
Like hotels in Japan, accommodations in Seoul are clean and well-maintained. Rarely am I concerned about the sanitary conditions of any hotel rooms in the city, regardless of budget.
Seoul Hotels are affordable. For $50USD you can score a decent superior room but requires a short walk to a metro subway train station. Hotels in the $80USD price range will set you up in a busy neighborhood with train stations steps away.
Most budget hotels in Seoul don’t have 24-hour check-in service. If you’re staying at such a hotel you must remember to inform your late arrival ahead of time. This way they’ll have someone wait to greet you.
Don’t be concerned if you can’t find a Seoul hotel that doesn’t include breakfast. It’s the city of Seoul, you will not have a problem finding many kinds of reasonably priced food.
I would look for hotels in the following order: Myeondong, Insadong, Hongdae, Gangnam, and then Itaewon…
5 BEST PLACES TO STAY IN SEOUL FOR THE FIRST TIME:
Myeongdong – Some consider Myeongdong as one huge tourist trap. Who cares. Plenty of Koreans eat, and spend time and money in Myeongdong too. Koreans love to hang out in Myeondong which is why you should look for a hotel in this area. There are many affordable foods to be bought on the streets or enjoyed at sit-in restaurants. It’s perfectly fine etiquette to walk and eat on the streets of Seoul.
Insadong – Lots of souvenir shops mixed in with traditional old-style Korean restaurants tucked into quiet lanes. Easy walking distance to the beautiful palaces of Seoul. Stay here if you want a less hectic atmosphere. Yet want to be close to all the action and take beautiful walks around Seoul.
Hongdae – Cheapest area to stay in Seoul. This area is popular with Seoul’s youngsters and hipsters. Also good for oldsters like me. Lots of good eateries and cafés. I wrote about things to do in Hongdae here. You’ll like it here regardless of age.
Gangnam – Stayed here because of Psy’s Gangnam Style video. Lots of tall shiny office buildings, bars that ooze charm and character, and brand-name stores. The area looks expensive but not much more than other Seoul neighborhoods.
Itaewon – Can’t say this is my favorite area in Seoul but there are a lot of budget hotels in Itaewon. I only stayed in a few hotels in Itaewon previously. Because it was close to the meeting point for a one-day tour of the DMZ that I joined.

1. MYEONGDONG (명동)
Hotel Price Range: $40USD to $150USD Subway Line: #4 Why Stay in Myeongdong: Lots of shops selling Korean beauty products and local fashion clothing. A high concentration of restaurants and dessert shops is another good reason you should stay in Myeongdong for your first visit to Seoul.
Myeongdong (also written as Myeong-dong) has lots of budget to mid-priced hotels. Most budget-minded travelers choose to stay there because most hotels with low rates yet decent quality can be found in Myeongdong.
Many cosmetic shops and an amazing array of cakes, ice creams, and snacks can all be found in Myeongdong at reasonable prices. And don’t forget there are many street food vendors too. So much that you probably wouldn’t need to go eat at a sit-in restaurant
Whichever hotel you choose to stay in Myeongdong I know you will be happy. However, here’s a short list of my favorite Myeongdong hotels that I know you will enjoy for your first epic time in Seoul!

I usually write full hotel reviews on hotels I think are worthy so I did a write-up on Nine Tree Hotel Myeondong so go check it out. I booked a standard room and paid around $80USD per night including taxes.
I chose Nine Tree because it’s one of the newer hotels in Myeondong and also it’s my wife’s first trip to Seoul. Also, I’m desperately trying to save up some brownie points.
Myeondong subway station is less than 100 meters from the hotel. There are 16 floors and around 140 rooms so Nine Tree Hotel is one of the biggest hotels in Myeongdong. It’s also definitely one of the higher quality hotels in the area so I think it’ll be great for your first time in Seoul as well.

This is a very good value hotel for budget travelers looking for comfortable and clean accommodation in Myeondong, Seoul.
I stayed in two types of rooms here, the economy room twin room and standard double room, at separate times and alone. Both rooms have a private shower inside by the way. Funny they call themselves a hostel. But I never noticed a hostel-type set up inside.
Regardless, I suggest booking a standard double room to get a slightly better view of the activity around Myeongdong. The price difference isn’t that much and a standard double room costs roughly $55USD with taxes a night.
Because this is a budget-style hotel in Meongdong, room cleaning is by request for the duration of your stay.

This hotel is situated in an area that is about 5-minute walk to the main hub of Myeondong’s center of activity. And, it’s about a 10-minute walk to Insadong.
I added this hotel because I know some travelers don’t want to stay in the heart of the action. After all, they don’t want to step outside of the hotel into a crowd of people.
Also, I believe the Sieoso Hotel Seoul is the best budget hotel for traveling families. If you’ve got at least 6 adults I highly recommend booking the Korean Style Ondol Room B. It’ll cost about $100USD including taxes and breakfast. Plus 3 kids under age 7 stay for free.

Sieoso Hotel also has other room types designed specifically for traveling families so I highly recommend taking a look at what they’ve got. They have a few other types of family-friendly room configurations that meet your needs.
There are also female-only dormitory-style rooms that cost about $20USD per bed, including taxes and breakfast, so that’s a real bargain.

So you’ve got some extra cash and you prefer to stay at a slightly upscale, yet affordable hotel in Myeongdong, then the full-service Tmark Grand Myeongdong Hotel should be your first choice. There’s a swimming pool and fitness center.
It’s one of the best four-star hotels in Myeongdong with double rooms priced at $80USD per night with taxes.
Breakfasts cost about $10USD more but I would pass. There are plenty of better and cheaper food alternatives outside of the hotel.
The Tmark’s location is closer to Namdemun Market. However, the hotel is surrounded by public transportation, including an airport limousine bus stop right outside of the hotel.

Myeongdong is a great area to stay in Seoul and I highly recommend booking a hotel in Myeongdong for your first awesome trip to South Korea.
But what if you’re not into shopping like me? What if you’d rather stay at a hotel near Seoul’s majestic grand palaces?
In that case, you should book a hotel near Insadong!
Walking around Myeongdong at night will be bad for your waistline…
2. INSADONG (인사동)
Hotel Price Ranges: $50USD to $200USD Subway Line: #1 or #3 Why Stay in Insadong: Close to Seoul’s majestic palaces and cultural sights. I like to call this area the heart of Seoul.
Insadong was the first neighborhood I ever stayed in when I first visited Seoul many moons ago. It’s near Sejong-daero, a grand avenue leading to Gyeongbokgung Palace.
I wanted to stay in Insadong because from my research Insadong is close to the major palaces of Seoul like Gyeongbokgung Palace, Changdeok Palace, and Jongmyo Shrine.
Insadong is the perfect area to start exploring the city’s rich history on foot. While making stops to indulge in many fine South Korean bakeries and coffee shops along the way.
Take a pleasant stroll through Insadong, Seoul, South Korea…
If you’re a Korean history buff or enjoy a romantic walk through the palace grounds with a special someone, Insadong is the reason why you would want to stay in Insadong for your first special trip to Seoul.

I don’t know if the owner remembers me but I stayed here a few nights after arriving in Seoul late after a long flight delay. The owner runs a pottery business on the ground level and rents his rooms above his shop
The rooms were not expensive at about $35USD with taxes and breakfast. Because I booked so fast I didn’t realize, that although rooms are private, the bathrooms are shared by other guests. But it’s not as bad as it sounds even for an OCD freak like myself.
Every floor doesn’t have a lot of rooms, and there are 4 floors, so a shared bathroom on each floor and you can use whichever one is available. There are no elevators so for me, I typically pack light. But the staff at the hotel will certainly give you a hand.
Honestly, it’s not that bad. I loved my stay at Yehahodye Guesthouse.
I stayed inside a single room and felt very comfortable. It was a little small but I didn’t feel cramped. The entire property has a nice little layout and even a rooftop area to chill out and enjoy a free simple breakfast in the morning.
I always believe in supporting small local businesses run by folks that care. If you’re reading this and traveling on a budget in Seoul, consider staying at Yehahodye Guesthouse for your very first visit to Seoul.
And go purchase a small souvenir pottery from their ground floor while you’re there.

Because there were only two nights at Yehahodye guesthouse I moved over to Mini Hotel Insa and booked a queen bedroom.
If you can’t get a room at Yehahodye Mini Hotel Insa is a good choice in the heart of Insadong.
It’s about a 5-minute walk north so both hotels are very close. However, it might be hard to find because this part of Insadong is like a funny little maze, with winding streets and a back alley. Honestly, it adds to the ambiance of the hotel as it’s quite charming.

The room is nice with a good mattress with the usual like Wi-Fi and air conditioning working well. There are toiletries available inside the bathroom.
This is more of a full-service budget hotel and very comfortable. I booked a queen-sized room for around $70USD per night with tax and breakfast. This is also another owner on-site hotel so you know service will be better than usual.

I wanted to add in some reviews of three-star hotels in Insadong. I picked Sunbee Hotel after a couple of recommendations from friends after they told me it’s not expensive. Considering the rooms are at least 35 square meters they were right.
I only paid $80USD per night with tax but no breakfast. If you want Sunbee Hotel breakfast it’s $7USD extra per night. But no worries, trust me there’s so much delicious food around the Insadong area you won’t even know what to eat.
My favorite place is Anguk Bakery and Cafe and it’s only a 10-minute walk from Sunbee Hotel. Anyhoo… back to the hotel review.

While I was there I stayed inside a standard double room with a queen-sized bed with my wife for a few nights. We needed more space because we were purchasing nail salon supplies for our salons in Bangkok. And we stayed for a week so we needed the extra space and especially a hotel where we could do our laundry.
And there are bigger rooms available such as the Korean double room at 42 square meters. I never stayed in those room types before but it cost $10USD to $15USD more. So maybe next time.

Here’s the only 4 star rated hotel I recommend for your first trip to Seoul in Insadong. Specifically for traveling families that want a big room space. And even more specifically kids traveling in your group that want a swimming pool.
Orakai Insadong Suites is situated just a few minutes walk from the main Insadong walking street. With one to four-bedroom types available to choose from at affordable prices.
I stayed inside their 2 bedroom deluxe room category with a whopping 74 square meters of space to run around. At least not for me but for the couple I was traveling around with their 4-year-old.
Also, there’s a full kitchen, which we didn’t use because we ate out all the time. But we made good use of the in-room washing machine and dryer.

Those are my top four picks for the best hotels to stay in Insadong for your first visit to Seoul. This is an excellent neighborhood for traveling families who need more space and solo travelers who want to stay near majestic palaces in central Seoul.

3. HONGDAE (홍대)
Hotel Price Ranges: $50USD to $200USD Subway Line: #2 Why Stay in Hongdae: For the youngsters or at least the young at heart. Many affordable hostels are geared towards young backpackers. As well as chic boutique hotels for older travelers like myself.
Always abuzz with activity, Hongdae is an area I just recently discovered for myself. Since then I’ve been visiting Hongdae more often ever since. Hongdae has such a cool vibe that I stayed there for a week.
I even wrote a blog post on what to do in Hongdae here. That just shows you how much I like this cozy and quaint neighborhood in Seoul.
It reminds me a lot of NYC’s East Village and hanging out with friends during my younger years. There are lots of cool cafés and international eateries to explore and indulge in. That’s because Hongkik University is nearby so lots of businesses in Hongdae attract uni-aged South Koreans.
But Hongdae also attracts lots of young foreign visitors as well because many budget hostels and affordable guesthouses are near Hongkik University. So if you’re of university age or a little younger I highly recommend booking a hotel in Hongdae for your first epic trip because you’ll fit right in.
4. GANGNAM (강남)
Hotel Price Ranges: $60USD $200USD+ Subway Line: #2 Why Stay in Gangnam: Because Korean pop superstar Psy says so.
If you’ve never heard of Gangnam then it’s possible you woke up from a deep coma recently. After Korean pop superstar Psy’s Gangnam Style music video exploded, Seoul’s business, yet fashionable Gangnam district was thrust into the international spotlight.
When I first explored Gangnam district I thought it would be an expensive area. Because there were so many tall shiny office buildings and luxury brand-name goods stores all lined up on a grand avenue.
But it’s not much more expensive than the other Seoul neighborhoods I’ve written about here. I do notice that the hotels in Gangnam, however, are newer and the rooms are larger in configuration.
Gangnam in a way is more orderly while Myeongdong, Insadong, and Hongdae to me are much more chaotic. Which is the way I like it. But Gangnam has plenty of nice hotels recommended for anyone looking for nice mid-priced hotels in Seoul’s posh neighborhood.
5. ITAEWON (이태원)
Hotel Price Ranges: $40USD $200USD+ Subway Line: #6 Why Stay in Itaewon: For me, it was the closest to a DMZ tour pickup location. But Itaewon is still convenient for sightseeing in Seoul by train.
Itaewon is near a US army base so there are lots of businesses catering and familiar to expats and American military personnel. To be honest I haven’t explored Itaewon so much and have stayed in 2 hotels in Itaewon. If you want to stay there be sure to check out the Korean War Memorial Museum in the area. Admission is free for regular exhibits.
Just because I haven’t explored around Itaewon doesn’t mean there’s nothing to do around the area. I’ve read there’s a nice selection of international restaurants behind the Hamilton Hotel Itaewon but at the time I didn’t have a chance to visit. But soon I’ll do a post about things to do in Itaewon probably after my next trip to Seoul.
If you’re staying at a hotel in Itaewon be sure to drop by the War Memorial of Korea Museum. Admission is free except for special exhibitions…

There are many hotels, guesthouses, and hostels all over Seoul perfect for sightseeing in one of the most beautiful cities in East Asia. If you can’t find ones that you like on this post you’re not going to have a problem finding one that’s right for your budget and travel needs.
But here are 5 tips to remember before you book your hotel in Seoul based on my personal experiences:
South Korean hotels, guesthouses, and hostels’ typical check-in times range from 2 pm to 3 pm. Check-out times are typically 10 am. From my experience, hotels in Seoul popular with tourists are strict on check-in rules, meaning they rarely allow guests to check in earlier.
Most budget-priced hotels in South Korea don’t provide daily housekeeping until requested.
Seoul budget hotels that include breakfast in their room rates have simple offerings, like cereal, toast, boiled eggs, rice porridge, and boiled sweet potatoes, you get it. It may not be the best but it’s always sufficient.
If you or anyone traveling with you have mobility issues it might be best not to book a hotel near Namsam Park. The area around Namsan Park has hills and inclines that will not be easy to navigate for those with mobility issues.
The worst time to visit South Korea is the month of August because of typhoons. So, if you’re looking for the cheapest rates for Seoul hotels that’s when you want to go. Just have a good sturdy umbrella with you.
I’ve traveled back and forth through Seoul on my way to NYC and Bangkok too many times to count. And I’ve stayed in a lot of different neighborhoods in Seoul. Which means a lot of nights spent inside hotels around Seoul.
I’ve never had one bad hotel experience from the hotels I’ve stayed in for these reviews. Sure there’s going to be normal wear and tear, particularly in popular Seoul hotels here and there. But the air conditioning was good in the summer. And the heating worked well in the winter. Just one of the many reasons why I would travel to Seoul without hesitation.

Hello Maddie, the biggest tip I can recommend you is to visit Myeongdong area first in Seoul. Subway trains, food, shopping and hotels are all there. Plus I forgot to mention airport limo buses stop in Myeongdong too. Have a great time Maddie!

Hello Yoshua, how are you? Wow, that’s a lot going on. For tour packages you can check online there are many. Try Trazy.com they have many tour packages for South Korea. As for subway trains I recommend planning on where you will be visiting specifically on where you want to visit in Seoul before committing to buying a subway pass. But honestly, if you can walk, I recommend sightseeing Seoul on foot. I’ve don it plenty of times. You can walk to nearly all of the beautiful palaces starting from Insadong area. If you’re time is limited to 4 days in 5 days in Seoul than I recommend just staying in Seoul for the entire week. Or take a day trip to Suwon. There’s lots to see and do close to Seoul. And I don’t think one day in Busan is enough time, honestly.

I am planning to visit South Korea in 3rd week of September. I am there for work but I have one day spare to go around Seoul. Which area do you recommend to stay and what are the must see places as I just have one day in hand.
Also I have a morning flight at 9 am so i need to get to the airport early next morning.

Hello Joi, how are you? No need to divide into 3. The most maybe two. But even then if it was me I’d just stay in Insadong or Myeongdong. Both those areas are close to each other. Insadong is closest to the palaces while Myeongdong is closer to shopping. I mostly stay in Myeongdong and I can walk to Insadong in about 15 minutes. Probably faster if I don’t stop and take photos =)
I would say as long as you have one luggage should be easy to move around. At least for me =)

Hello Jenny, there’s definitely street food in Gangnam but not in the same scale as Myeongdong. I know it’s crazier and hectic in Myeondong but there’s way more street food in that area compared to Gangnam.
