Surprisingly Affordable Hotel in Kuala Lumpur’s Chinatown
KL’s Chinatown is one of the best areas to stay in the city for your first visit to Malaysia.
I came across lyf Chinatown Kuala Lumpur Hotel while searching for hotels on Agoda.com. At the time, I saw a 19 sqm. room for $40 USD per night, including taxes.
I booked two nights to make this review.

This particular room type is called “One of a Kind”. It’s a peculiar name, but whatever. I liked it. It’s a modern, fresh, comfortable bed and most importantly clean.
I actually think they are marketing towards the young digital nomad crowd. I’ll explain more about that later.

lyf KL Hotel Chinatown Location
lyf Hotel isn’t exactly in KL’s Chinatown, it’s actually on the border of it. To get to Chinatown, it’s a 5 minute walk. Not a big deal.
The nearest train station is Masjid Jamek LRT Station, just a 300 meter walk. So if you prefer public transport to get to KLIA, being near this station is convenient.
Exploring KL from this hotel’s location on foot is very possible.
Nearby Points of Interest
- Chinatown 650m
- Masjid Jamek 300m
- Central Market 500m
- Jalan Alor 1km
- Bukit Bintang 1.2km
Bukit Bintang is KL’s prime tourist center and I walk there often. But you can always hop on the train at Masjid Jamek LRT station if you don’t feel like walking.
I’ve even walked 1.8km to the Petronas Twin Towers.
Overall, the location is terrific for exploring the city.

lyf Hotel Vibe
First thing I noticed about this hotel is that it has a young vibe type of energy. Perfect for the digital nomads out there looking for a comfortable, clean hotel with fast wi-fi for work online.
But to access faster internet speeds, you had to register for Ascott Star Rewards.
There are plenty of power outlets, including USB power ports, too. This is just one of the reasons why I think this hotel is marketing towards digital nomads.

I usually stay at hotels in the $35 USD range when I travel alone in KL. Which means no gym.
This is the first hotel I’ve ever stayed in KL with a gym. It’s a small, tiny gym. But the equipment looked new. I think a lot of the younger travelers would definitely take advantage of this.
Not bad for $40 USD a night.

And they have these washers and dryers. With iron and ironing boards. Which is why I think they’re geared towards digital nomads on longer stays.
Very Comfortable Room

I slept like a baby on this bed, and the pillows were really good too.
And I was in a room facing the back, away from the street. So it was quiet. However, I could hear other guest closing their doors.
The bathroom was very clean. The shower had great water pressure and hot water. The towels still looked new. It was just an overall comfortable stay because I felt like I walked into a new hotel.
Even though it opened a few years ago.

I’d Stay There Again
The lyf Chinatown Kuala Lumpur Hotel is rated as a 4 star hotel. My opinion is that’s a bit too high. At most, I’d say it’s a 3 star.
The location is great. Hotel staff are friendly. Most importantly, my room was clean and super comfortable. I truly enjoyed my stay.
